pmcd, there is nothing shady about kodi. It's perfectly legal in Canada.

I think he is referring to the legality of the streams coming from the Kodi plugins. Kodi itself does nothing illegally.

Hulu is completely free, has tons of content (movies and TV shows), and doesn't require XBMC. It does have commercials, but instead of 5 minutes long (as you'd normally get when watching regular TV) they're only 30 seconds. It has to be launched with an American DNS but that's easy to do using something like Hola.

We've just heard back from Bell. We are hoping to offer CraveTV to our members in February of this year

Downloading music is (possibly, though I don't think it's ever been tested in the courts) legal in Canada due a loophole in the law caused by the extra fees we pay on writable media here. Those extra fees were added on to media prices specifically to pay artists for their content that was being pirated onto burnable CD's, back in the day. At least, that used to be the case, I haven't really kept up with it because I don't particularly care. Sharing that music with others (ie if you are downloading via torrents and haven't turned off your uploading capability) has *never* been legal, though. And the streaming content for shows and movies that you can get through various Kodi plugins is absolutely not legal in Canada, period, never has been. No legal loopholes there to provide any money to artists creating movies and TV shows.

Hulu is more of a gray area. Artists (or rather, the studios) are being paid based on the ads shown on Hulu, at least... But technically you're violating Hulu's terms of service, as well as violating the rights agreements of the content owners since Hulu doesn't have the rights to broadcast that content in Canada.

I agree. Hulu itself is perfectly legal and there's nothing shady about it. Technically it shouldn't be used in Canada, but how many Canadians watch the American version of Netflix? I'm certainly not going to lose any sleep over it. And I'd much rather use a legitimate service like Hulu than one of the completely illegal XBMC/Kodi plugins such as 1Channel.

Huh. I'm surprised! Will it only be available to TV subscribers?

kody developers would flip out if they read what you just said lol
but i do agree,, there are some plugins on kodi that are shady,,
kodi is doing everything to shed that shady image that have been tattoo'd with.. check ebay lately? all those illegal TV box's powered by kodi have been removed due to complaints from kodi developers themselves.

PS note that i used the term "tattoo'd".. that was on purpose.. i dont think the shady image will ever be shed, the only thing they can do is wear a long sleeve shirt!

Considering their roots were "xbox media center" for hacked/modded xboxs... they shouldn't be too surprised about their image.

Out of curiosity, is CraveTV or Shomi for that matter, anything like Hulu with regards to having current TV episodes? All their commercials make it look more like Netflix where it's a season behind.

I use Hulu Plus personally, and while it's a grey area, at least I can watch shows the next day after they've aired and it feels slightly more legal than streaming it from some random website or torrenting the episode.

Im happy to hear about Crave TV coming to Vmedia next month. Bell just announced new deals to bring Showtime tv shows to Crave TV and TMN. $4 a month seems like a fair price for some great tv shows!
